Singing brings out joy

Next time you hear your teenager singing and dancing to music that you find to be deafening, think about this. They know something intuitively that we have forgotten. Certain vibrations and movements are healing.

When we have lost someone dear to us, I know the last thing we may want to do is sing. In fact certain songs can bring on tears. However, we also know that exercise helps during grief, and singing and laughter erase fear temporarily. Singing promotes health because it increases the circulation and brings about changes in the brain chemistry. We get a feeling, even if only for a moment, of joy. That can help us stay healthy during the grief process.

As you are going through the grief journey, take a few moments to try what our teenagers do. Put on an uplifting song with easy words and let yourself move and sing with the music. Let that be your short grief break for the day.

If you can move through your grief journey singing and dancing, even for a few moments at a time, you may find that the end result for you is better health for your body, mind and spirit. This in no way means that you are being disrespectful to your loved one. In fact, you are doing exactly what they would want you to do: You are using a tool to work through the grief. Besides, I believe it is said that there is music and singing in Heaven.

Affirmation: I will sing in the shower today and pick the silliest song I know. I will trust that only you are listening, my dear one, laughing at my attempts to sound professional as the water sprays out of my mouth.
